John Matthew Walker: Bio

Born September 3rd, 1965. At 13 months, our family moved to Africa where music was percussion, rhythm and dance. My father was a medical missionary, the only doctor for 30,000 people. I still hear the rhythmic wailing, drums pounding, feet stomping to raise the dust and swell the emotions. Women dancing, children running about all smiles. The simple driven melodies of the mbira or finger harp.
My mother kept the music going in our home and in our church. I cherish the memory of listening to her play the piano and sing. She made the piano come to life, thumping a glorious gospel sound out of otherwise ordinary hymns. From those roots I have grown to feel music deeply. What I sing burns right out of my soul. If I don't feel it, I don't sing it.
